and national affairs editor for new york magazine, emmy darling john heilemann, former pennsylvania governor and current governor of "now," governor ed rendell. msnbc contributor and queen bee of the grio.com joy reid and editor of the new york tiles sunday magazine, mr. sunday morning himself hugo lindhgren. call it the november surprise. in 90 minutes, president obama will hold his first press conference since re-election and he will be holding it amid circumstances no one could have predicted. just one week after america gave him a second term, at a time of high stakes negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff, the president will likely face questions about a salacious sex scandal involving the now former cia director. >> does the president see this in general as an unwelcomed distraction at a time when he's just -- was re-elected and has a bunch of priorities in terms of the fiscal cliff and in terms of his cabinet? >> well, i certainly i think wouldn't call it welcome. obviously the, as i said to ben, the information about general petraeus came to him as a surprise. >> not exactly we

you see this? >> senator john mccain and senator lindsey graham both said today that they want to have watergate-style hearings on the attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. and that if you nominate susan rice for secretary of state, they will do everything in their power to block her nomination. as senator graham said, he simply doesn't trust ambassador rice after what she said about benghazi. i would like your reaction to that and would those threats deter from making a nomination like that? >> first of all, i'm not going to comment at this point on various nominations that i'll put forward to fill out my cabinet for the second term. those are things that are still being discussed. but let me say specifically about susan rice. she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i've said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senat

of -- besmirch her reputation is outrageous. >> senator john mccain was trying to reach out to the president and get answers. what did you think of that? >> i think it is unfortunate because first of all if she had nothing to do with benghazi or the u.n ambassador she shouldn't have been out on all of the sunday shows that some five days afterwards stating that it was a spontaneous demonstration that was triggered by a hateful video that turned out to be absolutely false. there was month demonstration. i don't know how you logically assume that she had nothing to do with benghazi since it was the white house that had her on all of the sunday shows second of all, i am not trying to get into a mano-e-mano about the united states. i am trying to find answers that resulted in the death of 4 brave americans. and obviously there have been so many conflicting stories and so much conflicting information including the president of the united states at the end of the second debate with mitt romney saying i said it was a terrorist attack in the rose garden on the 12th when that was not true. that night

passed already, with those rates and john boehner responded. >> the senate has already passed a law like this. democrats in the house are ready to pass a law like this and i hope republicans in the house come on board, too. we should not hold the middle class hostage while we debate tax cuts for the wealthy. >> i think in stead of the house moving on the senate bill, the senate ought to move on the house bill. >> so the debate has been engaged. it's going to be an interesting conversation on friday to get it started. >> that's right. he'll have the senate leaders and house leaders over to talk about this. one of the things that was so clear from that press conference was that the president is saying let's move this forward, let's move this forward now. he is certainly realizing that when you look at the four years that he has ahead of him, really it about the next 18 months to two years. that's when he has a mandate that, when he has political capital to spend. quickly he also wants to forestall some of these tax hikes that could come as early as january. john boehner initially said, lis

. happening now. another top commander in a widening scandal swirling around general david petraeus. john allen is now the subject of a pentagon investigation. it centers around hundreds, possibly thousands of e-mails sent to this woman. details of where she fits into an increasingly tangled web of relationships. i'll talk about all of this with the chair of the senate intelligence committee. dianne feinstein says it is like something off the front page of a tab roid mloid magazine and s demanding answers. i'm wolf blitzer and you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with stunning twists in the scandal that brought down the head of the cia, general david petraeus. another u.s. general is caught in the same tangled web. john allen, top commander in afghanistan, is being investigated by the pentagon for allegedly sending inappropriate e-mails to a married woman, the same woman whose complaint of threatening e-mails from general petraeus' lover cracked the scandal wide open. barbara starr is trying to sort this out for us. it is rather complicated, what's the latest you're getting? >> it

it. >> pelley: in the same question, the president was asked about general john allen, commander of the u.s. forces in afghanistan and his nominee to lead nato. but mr. obama was silent on allen. the same f.b.i. investigation uncovered e-mails between allen and a socialite, jill kelly, who hosted functions for central command in tampa, where both petraeus and allen had worked. based on those e-mails, mr. obama placed allen's nomination to nato on hold. bob orr has our story tonight from washington. >> reporter: the career of general john allen hinges on the content of some 200 e-mails he exchanged with jill kelly. sources say allen was confronted with some of the e-mails by the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff martin dempsey. allen's attorney late today issued a statement saying general allen intends to fully cooperate with the inspector general investigators and directed his staff to do the same. allen has told officials he's done nothing wrong and has written nothing to kelly that would preclude his nomination. officials have characterized the communications with kelly as

cost the oil giants a billion dollars. welcome to "early start," i'm john berman. >> and i'm zoraida sambolin. nice to have you with us. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. >>> this is cnn breaking news. >> we begin this morning with breaking news. a new crisis in the middle east, israeli and palestinian militants exchanging deadly fire near the israel/gaza border. they say it's in retaliation for ongoing rocket attacks into southern israel. >> triggered by an air strike that killed the top hamas military commander. sayre -- sara sidner is following the story. >> reporter: you can see gaza behind me. there has been air strike after air strike after air strike. we ourselves witnessed three air strikes, major hit. we could see fire and then three plumes of smoke. since then we've been also seeing and hearing rockets coming over into southern israel. we now know there are three people who have died in israel in an apartment building very near, within a 7 kilometer radius of gaza in israel. we also know that at least seven people have been killed here in gaza and the air strikes are continuing.

on the personal scandal that has enveloped petraeus and john allen from nbc's andrea mitchell who broke the story. >> reporter: at his news conference the president went out of his way to praise petraeus. >> he has provided this country an extraordinary service. we are safer because of the work that dave petraeus has done. >> reporter: as paula broadwell remained in washington staying with her brother and still not talking, officials say the investigation was triggered in may when general john allen received an e-mail from an account called kelley patrol. sources close to kelly say it warned the general to stay away from her, that she could ruin him. general allen says people close to jill kelley forwarded it to her on the account she shares with her husband scott thinking she sent it as a joke. sources close to kelley said she had told general allen she had not sent it but was concerned she was being stalked or electronically hacked because it referred to a meeting they had scheduled in washington the following week. in june she and her husband received as many as four different e-mails from dif

that is on the table for democrats and republicans and that is the president and speaker of the house, john boehner and how they are going about this discussion as far as the bush tax cuts and america's sort of fiscal future. now, mark, i'm curious to hear your thoughts on this. first play sound from president obama and john boehner yesterday talking about doing the delicate dance of revenue raraisers. >> i'm not going to extend tax cuts for the wealthiest 2%. how you make up the trillion dollars just by closing loopholes and deductions, the math tends not work. >> i've outlined a framework how both parties can work together to avert the fiscal cliff without raising tax rates. ways to put revenue on the table without increasing tax rates. >> mark a baby version of the themes we've talked about before, which is to say you have a hard line part of the republican party then the deal making part of the republican party and the democrats. how do you think this turns out? can john boehner, do you think john boehner can corral or quiet the more radical elements of the republican party to come to the table

emails to petraeus and other senior military leaders besides general john allen. he's the top commander in afghanistan. meanwhile the fbi agent frederick humphries who launched the investigation of emails is being investigated by the fbi for his role in the case. specifically why he took concerns about this case to republican members of congress. house and senate panels are expected to meet again today with fbi and cia officials. they want to know whether national security was jeopardized and why congress didn't know about the investigation sooner. during a news conference on wednesday president obama praised david petraeus. >> general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he served this country with great distinction in iraq, in afghanistan and as head of the cia. by his own assessment he did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary as the director of the cia with respect to this personal matter that he's now dealing with, with his family and with his wife. and it's on that basis that he tendered his resignation and i accepted it. >> the house panel is looking into the govern

. then there is this big question, catherine, which john mccain is pushing for, a special investigation, a panel, a select committee to be put in place. is there any chance of that? >> reporter: well there seems to be some immediate pushback. to lay it out for folks. we have three senior senate republicans who believe the fallout from benghazi is so significant it is on par with some of the major scandals of american history. >> watergate investigation benefited from a joint select committee. iran-contra benefited from a select committee. i think finding the truth about benghazi is only possible if you combine the resources of these three committees and do it in a professional manner. >> reporter: shortly after that announcement the senate majority leader harry reid said he would not support the proposal and there has also been hesitation from other republicans and moderates in the senate saying that the proposal is premature. >> i think we ought to give the established committees of the congress an opportunity to see where we can get in answering some of the questions that everybody has. >> i do not see

of the security and exchange division, john beretta, head of the de deepwater horizon and achieving justice for those whose lives and livelihoods were impacted by the largest environmental disaster in the history of the united states. and to hold accountable -- hold accountable those who for responsibility for this tragedy. today, in the united states district court here in the eastern district of louisiana in new orleans the department filed a 14-count information charging bp with 11 counts of felony manslaughter. one count of felony obstruction of justice. and violations of the clean water and mike are tori bird treaty acts in connection with the oil spill that began in april of 2010. bp has agreed to plead guilty to all 14 criminal charges. including responsibility for the deaths of 11 people and the events that led to an unprecedented environmental catastrophe. the company agreed to pay $4 billion in fines and in penalties. this marks both the largest single criminal fine, more than $1.25 billion. and the largest total criminal resolution $4 billion in the history of the united states.
